The DiscoverySA Retro Run

Now don’t get me wrong, I have never been and probably never will be a runner. And YES, I KNOW THAT ONE SHOULD NEVER SAY NEVER, but running just isn’t for me. It isn’t a sport I enjoy and I know that no matter what my weight is, my body will not be able to handle the after effects of such intensity. It’s just one of those things, that when you know, you know.

Queue the Retro Run. A run hosted by Discovery SA that looks like so much fun. I never ever planned on running it in the beginning but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this was definitely something I really wanted to do. I wanted to prove to myself that I could enter a race and finish it WITHIN the allocated time and with my smile still intact.

Well, I don’t know about smile still intact but I managed to finish it within 46 minutes and 41 seconds, not too bad for a first timer but at the same time, definitely something I want to improve on!

The event in itself was beautiful, the venue, vendors and live entertainment afterwards was really good the only criticism I have is that, which relates to our finishers gift. Sadly, it wasn’t a medal, it was a visor, to fit into the theme of the 80s Retro run. For me a medal would’ve sufficed and I would’ve felt like I did the things, and don’t get me wrong, a visor is pretty cool too but I wanted the medal – and I know that many participants felt the same as we conversed along the route, you sort of feel cheated? Ugh, I guess it’s just one of those things.

But when it comes down to it, if you’re a first-time runner, I would definitely recommend this race- it is timed but you don’t need to be licensed- which is great. If you’re a first-time walker however, I would suggest going for something that is actually advertised as a walk. I say this because usually what happens is that with runs, or rather Run/walks that are advertised as “runs”, you need to finish within a certain amount of time (for the retro run I was an hour). This can end up being quite daunting for a first-time walker and then you end up feeling quite despondent/embarrassed at the end because you didn’t make it.

For me this race started with “YOU can do this!” and it ended with “You CAN do this!” and it showed me, well technically I proved to myself, that I can do anything I set my mind and heart to! This race has definitely stirred something up inside of me and I am itching to do another one! If y’all have any suggestions of upcoming races, please drop me a line in the comments or hit me up on Insta or drop me a line J Onwards and upwards because ALUTA CONTINUA!
